TEMP TAG LEGISLATION PASSES HOUSE UNANIMOUSLY WITH A 101-0 VOTE
The temp tag bill (H.1083) received unanimous approval by both House and Senate committees and by the full House and Senate. The bill now awaits ratification and signature by the Governor to become law.
S. 1083 Highlights:
- Creates a safer and more secure environment for State Troopers and officers when pulling over cars with temporary tags;
- Cuts out the fraud and abuse of the current temp tag system;
- Privatizes the program, thereby saving the State and SCDMV several hundred thousand dollars;
- Shifts the burden of developing the temp tag system and maintenance of the program to the private sector by saying that a statewide dealer association will administer the program.
Bill info:
- New temporary tags to have identification number which allows law enforcement and authorized entities to electronically identify the owner, their address, date of purchase, dealership place of purchase;
- DMV to design the tags and other specifications which allow for the top 50% of the tag to feature Dealer advertising and identification;
- The bill privatizes the administration of the temporary tag program thereby removing the cost from State government saving several hundred dollars;
- Dealers will be limited to charging a fee of the actual cost of issuing a temporary license plate plus standard shipping and handling costs.
